Back-to-School Special! Patti LuPone on Being Named 'Most Dramatic' and Other High School Memories

As kids all over America head back to school, Broadway.com decided to ask our favorite Broadway stars to look back at their own years in the classroom, sharing memories of favorite subjects and activities and describing their younger selves. Kicking off our special series is the pride of Long Island's Northport High School, the inimitable Patti LuPone, who will join her Evita co-star in An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin at Broadway's Barrymore Theatre beginning November 16. As always, our Patti tells it like it was!

Who was your favorite teacher and why?
Esther Scott, my junior and senior high school music teacher. Because she was inspirational, irreverent and had a great sense of humor.

What advice would you give to your school-age self?
You’d better go to your classes. Stop fucking around and go to your classes!

In school you would have been named “most likely to…”
I was named Most Musical and Class Clown. There was a third, but I don’t want to gild the lily (Most Dramatic).

What class did you dread and why?
Algebra 1. Because I took it five times and never got to Algebra 2.

What is your most embarrassing school moment?
I was never embarrassed. I was always outrageous.

Describe your school-age self in three words.
A bohemian; dedicated to the music department; desperate to get out of school.
